Dear Editor:
As someone who grew up in Trout Creek and loves this area, I’m writing a history of the neighbourhood for publication this year.
Despite extensive research online and in museums, I’m still searching for particular pictures that would be great additions to the history. If anyone has pictures of the following — or any related Trout Creek images of interest — and is willing to share them with me, I’d be grateful.
• The two-storey Antoine Pierre log home (later lived in by the Billie May family) that once stood near what is now the entry to SunOka just south of the highway bridge.
• Two pedestrian bridges: one over the ‘channel’ at the lakeshore near the foot of Miller Street that was removed in 1989, and one over Trout Creek that connected the entomology lab with the south end of Croil Avenue that was removed in 1972.
• Signs: The first Summerland Motel sign on Highway 97; the Tank ’n’ Tummy gas station sign at Wharf Street and Highway 97; and the Cedarbrook Auto Court sign on Highway 97.
• The ball diamond and bleachers that used to be in Powell Beach Park.
• The vehicle bridge (back road to ‘the Dominion Experimental Farm’) over Trout Creek near the mouth of the canyon.
• Tents/facilities that were once part of Camp SOREC.
• Freight/boats/wharves along the lakeshore in Trout Creek prior to 1920.
Also, if anyone knows the whereabouts of minutes of meetings of the Trout Creek Point Community Association (in existence from 1952-1962), please get in touch at summerland528@gmail.com or 250-494-8343.
