LETTER: Kemp Lake foreshore plan should be delayed

Weekly letters to the editor from within the Sooke community.

I attended an open house on Jan. 27 to hand in my objections questionnaire to the improvement to the Kemp Lake foreshore access.

This lake is the water supply for a great percentage of residents in Otter Point and some in Sooke. In the Greater Victoria Water Shed, this wouldn’t be allowed for fear of compromising the water supply.

This project is totally wrong at this moment.

We need to wait until the Kemp Lake Water District is hooked up to Capital Regional District water.

In the last year, I have seen signs three times warning residents in Otter Point to boil their water. This project will only increase pressure on the lake’s delicate water system.

I was told by a CRD official that this is an improvement for local people and that’s probably who would be using it.

But the draft information states this is done in conjunction with the Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C. whose address is in Victoria, so it seems likely it won’t be just locals using this new improved access.

I ask that the CRD parks committee table this for a later date until the Kemp Lake water problem is resolved. I hope this won’t be a done deal by the time this letter is published, as it didn’t say when this would be discussed and voted on by the committee.
