LETTER: Leave the crosswalks

The City of Penticton should leave the white-striped crosswalks as they are.

It is nice to see the Pen High students honouring the LGBTQ community by painting a crosswalk on school property in rainbow colours.

However, I agree with the city for deciding not to paint the pedestrian crossings on public streets, though not for the reasons given in your article (Penticton Western News, July 27, Inclusion more than just a sidewalk).

Crosswalks are painted with white stripes for safety reasons. They are highly visible to all drivers. If painted in rainbow colours, these crossings could be very hard to see at night, especially if raining. Also, they may be nearly invisible to colour-blind drivers.

The city should leave the white-striped crosswalks as they are.
