LETTER: Let’s not wait for others

I question the interesting editorial from Tom Fletcher (Nelson Star Aug. 24/16) in which he does not differentiate between the aeons-long climate changes the planet has experienced with the human-caused changes that are happening now. We humans are right now influencing climate change for the first time. Therefore we can influence it for the better. Let’s do it.

Yes, we must protect ourselves from rising costs if we bring in taxes on carbon. A fee-and-dividend process would do this by returning those taxes directly to us, the people, rather than putting them into government coffers.

I wonder why Christie Clark would choose and organize, at our expense, a team to advise her on policy and then not accept their advice?

Let’s not be part of what Tom Fletcher calls “those who don’t care if their grandchildren perish in a hell-fire of fossil fuel use.” Let’s not wait for “the rest of the world.” If not us, who will start the upwards change?
