LETTER: Lions Park was never meant to be a designated sports field

From reader Judy Robertson

Re: “Sports groups criticize changes to Lakeside Park scheduling” April 18

I believe organized sports groups have forgotten what Lions Park is supposed to be. The land was donated to the city to be a childrens play park for Uphill area residents …our only green space. It was never meant to be a designated sports field!

RJ Warren stated in the article that he felt Lions Park would be sitting empty if not booked for ball games. It is never empty! We live right beside it and it is constantly used by local families and by others who come from elsewhere in the city to enjoy the peace and tranquility of a park where adults, children and dogs are free to play their own games.

Children’s games and leisure time should not always be organized and controlled by adults running sports groups. Our park has enough ballgames happening here!
