Dear Editor:
One of Summerland’s little gems is its museum.
Over the past year there have been significant changes in staffing, board membership, and philosophy regarding the role and purpose of the Summerland Museum.
As we near the end of the year it is a good time to remind the citizens of our community that although the oversight of the museum is by the board of directors and the members of the Summerland Museum and Archives Society, that the museum truly belongs to the community.
A substantial portion of funding for the museum comes from grants from the municipality and from the British Columbia Gaming Branch.
The museum society encourages members of the community who wish to preserve and promote the history of Summerland to become members of the society.
The society is a registered charity organization and can issue charitable tax receipts for donations given above the $10 cost of a membership.
As well, the society encourages people to visit the museum and discuss the directions the society wishes the museum to take with staff and to give input and support to the society and its board members to fulfill its mission statement and society mandate.
To be better prepared to venture forward in the future as a community it is important that we preserve our history and learn from our past.
