Re: Council contemplates idea of marijuana shop regulation (News, Sept. 7)

What an embarrassing time in our civilization to have a natural plant made illegal.

It’s a joke that got out of hand. It was instigated by would-be politician Harry J. Anslinger in 1935 that actually got a foothold and became law, pulling the wool over the eyes of the innocent, uninformed public.

Stupid laws should be disobeyed. Whatever the excuse, medical or recreational, just don’t prevent people from growing their own. To each their own, always acting responsibly toward each other. It’s not the essence, it’s the behaviour that should be of concern.

Historians will look back at this era and chuckle to themselves: “What the hell did they have in mind, or having no mind.”

We have lived with this stupid law all my life, 80 years, so it’s about time we came to our senses and eliminate the stigma about cannabis. It has so many useful benefits, from building materials to medicine. Dispensaries? Big deal – if money can be made from its availability, more power to them.

Everybody wants a piece of the action, including lawmakers, but just remember it is a natural plant and us humans should be able to grow it and use it as we wish. Here’s to ya!
