Letter: Neighbourhood society elated heritage home will not be demolished

Your decision to withdraw the request for demolition…is indeed worthy of our expressed gratitude.

Open letter to Abbott Street heritage house owner:

The news of a reversal of fortune for the distinguished heritage home of 2072 Abbott St. was received by many with a sense of relief and elation. Your decision to withdraw the request for demolition and the avoidance of the pending loss of a cultural artefact specific to Kelowna’s cultural identity, is indeed worthy of our expressed gratitude.

It has not escaped us that Resears Ltd., is the owner of record for the two homes next door at 2094 Abbott St. also, which includes the historic Hughes-Games house. Your taste in selecting significant heritage homes within the Abbott Heritage area is exceptional.

It may be most befitting then that I would wish to seize this turn of events to personally invite you into our “heritage neighbourhood.” Nothing would please us more, than to have you join our commitment to preserve the elements of Kelowna’s most significant heritage public asset, the Abbott Heritage Area.

James Avery, president

Abbott Heritage Area Society
