Letter: Painful to listen to visitor centre decision

I noted most who spoke in favour did not reside in the downtown area and this would not directly impact them.

To the editor:

I attended the public hearing concerning the rezoning of parkland space that would allow Tourism Kelowna to build their building. I spoke to defend our park and waterfront space. I live downtown and this green space is my neighbourhood. I noted most who spoke in favour did not reside in the downtown area and this would not directly impact them.

It was painful to sit listening to council, after a mere five minutes deliberation, read what seemed to be prepared statements (with the exception of Charlie Hodge) then watch the “in favour” sides smiling and shaking hands. I walked away feeling defeated, knowing that I had failed to protect a park, which business owners and almost all of council could not have cared less about. Finally I needed to remind myself: I guess that’s the democratic process, right?
