Letter: Reduce curbside pickup to two weeks

The agenda for the regular council meeting of March 22, 2016 included a Finance Committee Update.

To mayor Walt Cobb and councillors:

The agenda for the regular council meeting of March 22, 2016 included a Finance Committee Update dated Feb. 22, 2016 which states that the curbside contract with Central Cariboo Disposal costing $525,000 per year expires in May of 2017.

I humbly and respectfully suggest that any renewed contract for this service stipulate curbside pickup every two weeks instead of the weekly schedule presently in use.

This would be feasible due to the large volume capacity of garbage and recycling containers provided to households by the city and mindful of the current awareness of the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle.

Such reduction in service requirement of a renewed contract would save taxpayers several hundred thousand dollars annually, approximating three quarters of a million dollars over a three-year period.

These funds could be used to repair roads and/or reduce property tax demands on city residents.

I suggest the adjustment for most households would be minimal and the resulting tax savings worthwhile.
