LETTER – Seeing businesses collaborate for mutual benefit during these trying times is encouraging

Dear editor,

Dear editor,

I applaud the operators of two Comox restaurants (Tidal Café and Toscano’s) for their recent creativity and co-operation.

By sharing their respective patios with each other, they have created a win-win solution in the midst of the current COVID-19 restrictions.

This superb example of collaboration has provided more outside dining tables for each of the establishments during their respective hours of operation. Patrons will have less time to wait, the businesses will benefit from increased revenue, servers and staff will continue to have jobs, and our local economy will benefit as well.

The last 14 months have been a challenge for individuals and businesses alike. In addition to the effects of the virus on both the health of individuals and our healthcare system, stress levels are higher, financial struggles are common, and COVID-fatigue is widespread.

In addition to wearing a mask, social distancing, and getting the vaccine, there are many things we can do to protect ourselves from the effects of the pandemic, such as exercising or walking daily, getting outside and enjoying the beauty of nature, and making positive connections with others.

These two restaurants have also provided us with a wonderful example of how “being a good neighbour” leads to a better community. How can each of us show the same level of creativity and collaboration in our own lives? How can we connect with our neighbours and fellow community members to make the best of our current situation?

In the words of the author Mark Hyman, “The power of community to create health is far greater than any physician, clinic or hospital.”

Dr. Jonathan Kerr,

Comox
