LETTER: Sewage treatment upgrades

The City of Nelson has been looking at upgrading our sewage treatment to tertiary treatment.

The City of Nelson has been looking at upgrading our sewage treatment to tertiary treatment.

This will be at significant cost to us.

The treatment plant is built to handle peak historical and projected maximum flows. This effects the cost of any upgrades to the plant.

There are many, if not most, of our heritage commercial properties in Nelson that have their roof drainage systems flowing directly into the sanitary sewer system.

This amounts to millions of litres of rainwater to be treated every year at huge expense.  This is a holdover from the days all sewage went directly into Kootenay Lake.

Because of the high cost of treatment and the direct added capitol cost of a new plant, what are the options to reduce the peak flows at the treatment facility?
