The BC government has approved the construction of the Site C Dam. This huge dam will cost BC taxpayers $8.3 billion. This dam will flood over 57,000 acres of agricultural land. Once again, there has been a lack of consultation with our native people.
There are currently four court cases put forth by the native people. They have to raise their own court costs, while we, the people of BC, are paying for the government’s lawyers. Such a large dam is not needed. Construction of smaller, local dam sites would be more cost effective, more environmentally friendly, destroy much less agricultural land, and would be more acceptable to our native population after proper consultation and agreement.
The amount of power that Site C will produce is overkill for the present and future times. I fear that it is too much to expect the provincial courts to rule against the government given the fact that construction has already begun.
