To the editor:
As reported in the Capital News, we see that there are spats already with the newly-elected West Kelowna council regarding who will represent our community on the regional district board, the argument being should the top councillor in the polls automatically become a regional director.
Since when are councillor positions given according to the polls? Some are elected at the top, some are in the middle and some are on the bottom, but they all must work together for the good of the community.
Council is team sport, not an “I will show you.” The election backbiting should be over as we move forward.
Unfortunately, 70 per cent of the eligible voters don’t exercise their franchise to vote.
In Kelowna, Robert Hobson topped the polls for many election years. He was not given positions within council because of that, but because he held degrees in planning.
In West Kelowna, Coun. Duane Ophus did not receive council position appointments because of the polls, but because of his education background.
If bickering is to start on these small matters, how is West Kelowna, with its major challenges over the next four years, going to move ahead?
