In political campaigns, like war, the first casualties are truth, clarity and civility. It is unfortunate that we have reduced politics from a contest of ideas to a campaign of character assassination.
However, the 2014 election is over and it is time to restore the first casualties.
We can begin by expressing appreciation to the outgoing mayor, councillors and school trustees for their three years of dedicated service to our community. They set aside their personal and family lives for the well-being of Mission and have given their best for us. We need also to express appreciation to the incoming mayor, councillors and school trustees for putting aside their personal lives and dedicating their talents for the four years to come.
Thank you to all those who ran for office for their willingness to work on our behalf with the full understanding of the implications of such a commitment. Let us now come together for the betterment of Mission and work together to ensure that Mission is a home of choice and not just a place to relocate. We need a collective sense of good will and progressive ideas for Mission to grow and thrive.
