LETTER: The arts feed our souls

From reader Meg Stewart

Not too long ago I would’ve taken for granted my good fortune in such a small town to indulge in evenings of professional dance, theatre, live music in crowded venues (from singer songwriter to big bands), library events, full movie theatres, dancing in large venues with big sound systems, community choirs and music festivals.

I hope I haven’t missed anything. It never occurred to me that the last event I would go to was at a local bar and restaurant, elbow to elbow dancing to the likes of some incredible women blues singers and instrumentalists (Kootenay Women and Blues Revue, Feb. 29).

I’m starved for our locally brewed talent. We’re working really hard to keep local business, sports and education open and accessible. The arts feed our souls. Culture defines us. We need to find a way to honour the joy they have provided us through the good times and help to provide for them through these challenging ones. I don’t have the answers, but we’re a creative group in this amazing region.
