Letter to the Editor: Encourage the Prime Minister to ban tankers

Editor:

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau committed to formalize an oil tanker ban for B.C.’s North Coast. This could happen as quickly as the end of the year, but Prime Minister Trudeau needs to hear your support.

A strong and legislated moratorium that doesn’t expire is essential to protect coastal ecosystems. It needs to cover all of Hecate Strait, Dixon Entrance and Queen Charlotte Sound.

While necessary fuel must continue to reach coastal communities, crude or refined oils carried in bulk as cargo should be banned. When spilled in ocean environments, these kinds of oils don’t dissipate, and they cause great harm to nature and communities.

The Great Bear Sea, one of the most pristine and ecologically-rich regions in the world, is too valuable to remain unprotected.

Please encourage Prime Minister Trudeau to keep his promise and act quickly on an oil tanker moratorium.
