To the editor,
Re: City supports proposal for ocean centre, Jan. 11.
Nanaimo mayor and council must be applauded for their unanimous agreement in principle to proceed with public and council planning to bring the proposed Ocean Discovery Centre to this community. To be foresighted enough to see the value to this Nanaimo township oceanside community; also indigenous resident families, Gabriola Island residents and other communities nearby and to the north and south of us. The benefits for our families, and schools, young – and old, as well as to the interest of tourists and visitors alike at this time of community population growth and interest in world environmental change.

The writer was amazed recently to observe the multitude of small and colourful marine fish life disturbed by the ferry as they scavenged the turbulence in Nanaimo’s harbour. A testimony to their presence, resilience, and uniqueness. A lesser-known world of inhabitants and lifeforms who were certainly here before humankind and would further our interest, study, personal enjoyment and awareness the new discovery centre would bring to this community.
