LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Supervised consumption keeps people alive

When the bureaucracy rules, personal responsibility and human decency suffer, says letter writer

To the editor,

Re: Council retains control of sites for supervised consumption, Jan. 16.

This generation is dealing with a new set of big problems. Large numbers of homeless people, and lack of services for drug addiction and mental illness is fuelling the frustration felt by citizens. We must not translate that frustration into cold-hearted neglect of the most powerless population.

When the bureaucracy rules, personal responsibility and human decency suffer. Bean counting rules the day. That’s what happened when Riverview Hospital was emptied out with scarce support for the thousands of mentally ill patients.

The fact is that people die without supervised injection sites. If the neighbours don’t want that service near them then let them howl.
