LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Tent city shouldn’t receive, for free, what others pay for

Protesters, advocates and activists expect too much from government coffers, says letter writer

To the editor,

Re: Homelessness can’t be helped through blame, Letters, Aug. 28.

With each issue of the Bulletin I am more dismayed at the letter writers who think it’s OK for some in our society to set up camp on city/public land and expect to get, for free, services that everyone else has to pay for.

For those of you crying about ‘affordable housing’ I would note the official definition reads, “affordable housing costs no more than 30 per of household income before taxes.” So what is affordable for those who don’t work, earn no income and don’t pay taxes? Could it be the folks at Discontent City and their supporters are really advocating for free housing?

Are they really so naive as to not understand that the city (or government at any level) does not generate income but merely collects and spends the money it requisitions from taxpayers? Protesters, advocates and activists contribute nothing to government coffers but expect much.
