LETTER: Transitioning to renewable energy

Weekly letters to the editor from within the Sooke community.

The federal Liberals were untruthful in their election promises and dropped the ball on climate change.

Canada promised to cut carbon emissions by one-third within a decade at the December UN climate conference in Paris.

It’s been done in other countries around the world with less resources than Canada. We have renewable power sources such as wind, solar and geothermal, and the tools, technology, ideas and innovation to make it happen.

We can build a clean economy that will create long-term jobs, reduce extreme weather events, improve human health and reduce boom-and-bust cycles in the energy sector that are causing some regions of the country to suffer. With the price of oil plummeting and jobs in the oil sector being lost, we must transition to a clean economy powered by renewable energy.

Together, we can push the government to fulfil its promises. The longer we wait the greater the costs and consequences will be. We owe it to future generations and the planet that gives us life.
