Letter: We must look beyond our own points of view

Editor: I would like to comment on two recent letters submitted (and posted on your website), "Fact sheet on immigration not entirely factual" and "One third of refugee claimants entering Canada illegally." I also recently received this mentioned leaflet in my mailbox.

Regardless of where we sit on the political spectrum, we have a natural tendency to agree with information that aligns with our own points of view. It is always nice to see that information is cross examined, and fact checked, regardless of its source. In addition to this — and perhaps more importantly — is that we recognize a dog whistle when we hear it, regardless of the media platform.

Maybe we should make an earnest effort to examine these sorts of things through the lens of logic and practicality rather than ideology and sentiment.

Perhaps by doing so it might help validate (or maybe even change or alter) our points of view.

Coming up with effective solutions requires well researched facts rather than ideological selling points.
