With the election beginning, I took some time to research each of the candidates in our riding. I’ve worked on Parliament Hill and I know how important a local MP can be. That’s why I vote based on the strength and values of the local candidate first.
Even though I am not a Conservative, I am pleased that many in the Conservative Party are fighting to modernize their party. Many staunch Conservatives view LGBTQ rights as fundamental liberties to be defended. Even Erin O’Toole, the CPC leader, supports gay rights and trans rights.
That is why I was shocked and disappointed to find that our Conservative candidate Alana DeLong opposed same-sex marriage in 2004 when she was an MLA. She has avoided answering any questions about her record, or important social issues like conversion therapy or abortion access. Given her track record, one can only assume that she’s avoiding the questions because she opposes basic human rights. What kind of values are those?
Ms. DeLong: my partner and I have been together in love for three years. We are exploring adopting children, and are deeply in love. What makes us undeserving of the rite of marriage? What kind of values are those, Ms. DeLong?
