Letter: Why lock if nothing to lose?

Locked cars can create costly headaches if thieves smash windows

Re: Lock it or Lose It, Oak Bay News Our View, Dec. 2

The idea is good but I disagree. I keep my car in a driveway and locked with no valuables in the car.

A few years back someone broke my driver-side window and rifled through the glove box and ash tray. They found nothing. ICBC put a $300 deductible on my insurance policy for broken glass etc.

So it cost me $300 to get my window repaired. Rather than lock it and lose it, I now do the opposite. I leave a door unlocked, open the empty ash tray and open the compartment between the seats. There is nothing in the car to steal.

If I get a ticket for leaving my door unlocked it would be far less expensive than $300.

Mind you, I do not recommend doing this if you leave valuables in the car. You should not anyway.
