LETTER: Wilband Creek habitat restoration begins

Volunteers from Abbotsford Christian School helped with planting, and building nest boxes

The start of Willband Creek Park habitat restoration has begun with the Earth Day launch of a project funded by a matching grant from the TD Bank.

The grant application, a partnership with Abbotsford Parks, Recreation and Culture and the Abbotsford-Mission Nature Club, was selected as one of the winners from numerous applications submitted to TD Green Streets from across Canada.

Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman thanked participants, especially the 25 Grade 8 Abbotsford Christian School volunteers who, along with park staff, assisted in planting native species and installing 30 swallow nest boxes. These nest boxes were assembled by an eager Abbotsford Christian Elementary School Grade 5 class. Materials for these and 12 wood duck boxes installed four weeks earlier were donated by Blackwood Building Centre.

All in all it was a great example of a successful Earth Day community project.
