Letters: A question of safety on Maple Ridge’s newest, busy road

Need traffic light at corner of Laity Street and 128th Avenue, traffic's heavy

Editor, The News:

Further to discussion of excessive speeds on this upgraded road, it seems like the appropriate time to question the safety of the intersection at Laity Street.

The new traffic signals have a pedestrian-activated control for those wanting to cross to the north side of Abernethy, which is great.  But for vehicles travelling north on Laity and wanting to turn west on Abernethy (128th Avenue), one has to hope for a break in the heavy east-west traffic flow.

It will only be a matter of time before a driver makes a hasty decision and misjudges the space required to enter the east-west traffic flow and causes an accident.

Adding a traffic-activated switch on Laity would solve this problem.  I suspect that there are more drivers wanting to make this turn westbound on to Abernethy than there are pedestrians wanting to cross Abernethy.
