Re: ‘Stop playing games’ (Letters, June 10).
Rob Fleming is quite right when he says the B.C. Liberals are playing games by providing money to school districts across the province.
The game is to get re-elected.
There was too much outcry across the province and the impact of the cuts would be felt too close to the next election.
But Mr. Fleming is incorrect to say the Liberals are playing games with the public school system. They have a long-range objective they are deadly serious about.
The B.C. Liberals don’t believe in public education. They don’t have the public’s support to privatize it, so they are doing the next best (or worst, depending on your perspective) thing.
They are supporting the private schools with your tax dollars and underfunding public schools.
They have been very successful at driving students out of the public system and into the private system.
Private schools got a real boost when the B.C. Liberals forced the teachers into a strike and promised parents money for their children to be used however they wished.
The B.C. Liberals need to get re-elected to continue to with their long-term objective, which would destroy our public education system, cut after cut.
The B.C. Liberals will never admit this objective. It is not a position the electorate would support.
The electorate needs only look at the record to understand the B.C. Liberal plan for public education is death by a thousand cuts.
