LETTERS: Backyard hens ‘an excellent idea’

Proposal to White Rock council brings back fond memories

Chickens in backyards of White Rock? What a excellent idea.

The person who has brought this idea forward should be commended for her research of the chicken bylaws in various parts of Metro Vancouver. The pros and cons of chicken raising, how many chickens are suitable for the average backyard and the recommended maximum of chickens for the backyard.

As for the idea that chickens make excellent pets, this was true for Rodger the rooster, obtained from a promotion through the Surrey school board and B.C. chicken farms at the Cloverdale fairgrounds.

Mom bought four chicks and only Rodger survived the raccoons the first week. He followed my mom every day around our garden at Crescent Beach. He only got the heave ho when he began to crow 24/7 and ended up at the BC SPCA farm. He joined other chickens there and became part of my family’s history of pets raised.

So, yes, I think chickens should be raised in the backyards of White Rock.
