While it now may be a moot point, it is apparent that Surrey is going to get its own municipal police department. Surrey is also going to get “SkyTrain,” albeit at the expense of light rail to South Surrey.
Apparently, many millions were already spent on this project which will not be recovered. Were we not promised that SkyTrain would go to Langley for the cost of LRT? But now it is only to go as far as Fleetwood.
It was said that the proposed SPD would only cost a modest increase to the taxpayer. The proposed SPD would cost more and be staffed with fewer personnel than what the current RCMP has. With fewer boots on the ground, how will Surrey be safer?
Now it seems that the transition costs for the SPD will come at some considerable expense in monies and cancelled infrastructure and recreational programs to make up the shortfall.
City Hall seems to be quite vague on costing on these two large and expensive projects. Hence, the capital budget must be adjusted.
Seems to me that the ideas for these two costly projects were maybe hatched out in some back room and written on a cocktail napkin.
