Letters: Exit barrier arms would work for Ridge Meadows Hospital parking fees

Letter writer challenges that exit-barrier arms aren’t feasible at Ridge Meadows Hospital because of costs and layout.

Editor, The News:

While I am pleased to see that Maple Ridge council is interested in changing hospital parking fees, (The News, April 22) I believe it is unreasonable to expect it to be free, especially when a portion of it goes back to the hospital’s general-revenue fund.

However, I do challenge that exit-barrier arms aren’t feasible at Ridge Meadows Hospital because of costs and layout.

If they want to continue to receive revenue from parking, it is only reasonable for them to have to upgrade lots from time to time.

And this is one of those times.

As a frequent visitor to these parking lots, I can see at least two locations the barrier arms could be positioned with minimal modifications. Some concrete flower boxes strategically placed, an automated arm in the upper lot and one in the lower lot … what more do you need?

They just don’t want to pay for the new machines.

And while they’re at it, please add some more handicapped parking spots!
