Re: Parking pains add to coffers, Sept. 22 letters.

Further to Ralph Sketchley’s letter to the editor, the situation on Blackwood Street is aggravated by the over-zealous application of the parking bylaw by city ‘enforcers’.

They are making the most of easy pickings with the street being overloaded with construction workers’ vehicles. As a result of their scrupulous attention to metric detail, drivers now leave exaggerated distances from driveways further reducing available parking space for residents.

With all due respect to letter-writer Joanne Chipera (‘Civic-minded’ patrol adds up, Sept. 28 letters), White Rock needs no help from “vigilant and observant ‘civic-minded’” residents, because the bylaw people patrol our streets at least twice daily to ensure they bring in enough revenue to ensure the security of their jobs.

A study of the city’s parking bylaw fails to reveal the exact point from which the one-metre distance from a driveway should be taken.

It appears that our enforcers consider it to be from the top of the curb where it slopes up from the driveway entrance, but since Clause 42 of the bylaw forbids driving over this point, surely the measurement should be taken from the foot of the slope where the driveway meets the road.
