Re: City workers root out problem trees downtown, April 22.
The city is going to spend money removing these old trees, replacing them with other trees and then repairing the pathway. Simply repair the pathway leaving space around the tree. Problem solved. Add some flowers or a bench under the tree for citizens to enjoy.

Finally, before a big lawsuit happens – that’s if taxpayers have not already settled out of court for injuries by unsafe sidewalks.
The designs of these projects that are all concrete with little trees to grow and cause big problems are status quo, from the same book, unimaginative clones of the past. Try something interesting downtown. Trees are a mess and obviously destructive, and sidewalks are obstructed.
Murals are nice, overdone, but still nice. As for the historical, didn’t that go out like the ‘baby in the bathwater’ when Nanaimo started changing the names of old parks? Maybe have sculptures of trees, wired for lights of different events.
Or maybe just nice, unobstructed sidewalk.
