Couldn’t help but notice the City of White Rock has replaced the existing park signs or added new ones throughout the city. In my opinion, these are not only eyesores but a complete waste of taxpayer money.

Rather than blend in with the natural environment, they are like antiquated space ships that really spoil the natural beauty of a park.

There is nothing tasteful about them and I’d sure like to know who made the decision on what the new signs would look like and what materials would be used.

But what’s worse is the total cost of $71,680 for 17 signs. That’s more than $4,200 per sign. Although half this amount was covered by the province, the difference is still a total unnecessary and wasteful expenditure of almost $36,000 of the City of White Rock’s funds.

It is especially difficult to comprehend this expenditure in light of receiving our recent absolutely outrageous property tax bill! A simple piece of wood with the park’s name would have been more than sufficient, environmentally friendly, and harmonious with the park setting. This could have been part of a student art project using donated, recycled and salvaged materials as much as possible.

Our tax funds must be put to better use.

There is something seriously wrong with this mayor and council, and I invite them all to respond. They must become accountable to citizens and not waste valuable resources for such unnecessary endeavors.
