Re: Nick Walker wins Sooke River 10K (Sports, March 15)
Thank you for the extensive coverage of the Sooke River 10K Race. The photos and interviews were excellent.
Cathy Noel of the Victoria Marathon Society was a very fine race director and deserves much credit for the success of the event.
I would, however, like to add that a considerable number of Sooke volunteers helped to stage the event, from Girl Guides through seniors, the local RCMP detachment, fire department and, of course, the members of the Sooke Lions Club who made hundreds of pancakes for hungry runners, family and friends. Local volunteers acted as runner registrants, course marshals, water station attendants and food servers.
Sadly, it’s been four or five years since the demise of the Sooke Subaru Half Ironman. The Sooke River 10K Race demonstratedthat our community can still host a high profile athletic event.
A final note: 17-year-old Matthew Thomson, until recently a Sooke resident and a former EMCS student, ran brilliantly at therace to finish second overall, behind Nick Walker.
