Letters: Where’s the shrimp?

Local Sooke resident wants availability of local shrimp

Wondered if you had any idea where to buy Sooke shrimp nowadays? We used to get it from the fish shop on Belvista or at the Crab Shack, then (when the rules changed?) there was the occasional truck with local guys selling from its bed (and you were lucky to find out about their locality in time to buy some) – but there seems to have been no commercial fishing of Sooke shrimp for a few years now.

I asked the woman at the newly-opened Belvista shop about this and her response was that no one is fishing them commercially, but she didn’t know why, though thought it might have something to do with the regulations by which fish has to go off to be “processed” before it can be sold anywhere near where it’s caught.

As I want live and wriggling shrimp, processing is not what I need. Would love to know how to buy some.

I believe Sooke shrimp is among the best in the world, if not the best. How does the fish shop on Sidney pier appear to get around the regulations, as they seem to process their own? Thanks.

PS.  good to see that you are continuing in spite of all the problems!  Congratulations.
