In contrast to Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca federal Liberal candidate Lillian Szpak’s message recently during a radio interview, where she purports that Canadians are worse off than five years ago, I’d like to offer some balance.
I look at the good things that have been done by this Conservative government.
We built eight Orca class inshore training vessels in Victoria. There is an ongoing program to build 30 coast guard rescue ships with steady work, good pay and benefits.
Victoria also has a shot at the new Provider class navy vessels. None of this ever happened under the Liberals — everything stayed in the east. Finally, fair treatment for the West Coast.
Many local projects such as upgrades to Royal Roads University, the Ocean Institute and the overpass at the airport have provided local jobs.
They gave tax free savings and income splitting for seniors, and the opportunity to establish a registered disability savings plan so that a friend can provide for his disabled son when his is no longer here to help him.
Apparently not giving away $7 million of our tax dollars to questionable NGOs is a scandal. Thank you Bev Oda. That is not what our tax dollars are for.
I really like how Prime Minister Stephen Harper told the phony princes of the United Arab Emirates to “pound sand.” Our brave troops are doing the heavy lifting over there and this is how they treat us? Unacceptable.
We have come a long way under this government and my main point is that they and we richly deserve a majority, not the petty bickering that’s going on in this minority government.
