II Corinthians 4:6-7 For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves. (NAS95)
We Have a Treasure. The first thing that the Bible records God saying is, “Let there be light”.
It is that same creative power and authority that has spoken to His people and shone in our hearts so that we are able to know Christ. He has purposed that we would know His glory as we look on His Son.
He calls what He has given a treasure. I believe that we will only fully understand how great a treasure it really is when we see Him face to face.
But He has called us to value His presence now.
He compares us to earthen vessels. He intentionally left us common or ordinary so that it would be clear where the light was coming from.
It’s not the vessel that shines, but the light in the vessel. We are honoured to have the light shining out through us, but the power is not our own. It is Him in us that is the hope of glory.
