Canadians are grossly over-governed. We have 338 members of federal parliament for 33 million people. The United States has 545 elected congressmen for 330 million people.
We have 105 senators, while the U.S. has 100 for 10 times the population. The most dysfunctional of all is Greater Victoria, with 113 elected officials for a population of 350,000. By comparison, Calgary, with a population in excess of three times that of Greater Victoria, has just 26 elected officials.
If some rationalization and cost cutting is in order, these would be the places to start, not by cutting social programs that help the less fortunate in our society.
