Make train tracks a walking trail

Dear editor,

Re: Passenger train service proponents remain confident May 24 Record.

Interesting read of the current status of the proposed passenger train between Victoria to Courtenay.

What isn’t mentioned is the option of creating a walk/bike way along all or part of this route.

As one who has recently relocated from the south Okanagan I can attest to the value and use of a former rail bed converted to a gravel path that serves walkers, runners and bikers. In my view, this is a much better option from all perspectives, financial, tourism, environmental, and promotion of a healthy lifestyle. An excellent example of a mixed-use option exists in Summerland where a short section of track was left and is used as a historic steam train tourist draw.

There must be others in the Comox Valley who see the value of a walk way-at least in our part of the rail corridor.
