Many Langley sidewalks are hazardous to elderly, disabled

Editor: I am from out of town and was visiting my parents who live just off 200 Street. I visit quite often and I enjoy taking their little Yorkie for walks when I am there.

I use a walker and go down 48 Avenue around Grade Crescent.

I would like to say that I am appalled at the walkway on Grade Crescent. I cannot image having to use a scooter or wheelchair along this so-called sidewalk.

I was down this time visiting my aunt in the hospital because she’d had a scooter accident crossing 200 Street near the Colossus theatre.

She lived in the trailer park, and the residents who don’t drive use the crosswalks to do their shopping. When she was on the island where you have to press the buttons for the crosswalk her scooter caught the edge of the island and tipped over.

She broke her arm, shoulder and hip, and spent five weeks in the hospital before she passed away.

I am thinking that Langley is not a good place to live for seniors or people with disabilities.

My mother also uses a walker and wouldn’t ever consider walking around town. What a shame.

I think it might be a good idea for them to move to a community that is more user-friendly for people with disabilities.

I think  the “powers that be” who make the decisions about city walkways, etc., should be given walkers, scooters and wheelchairs and sent out to try and manoeuvre around the community’s sidewalks.

Maybe then something will be done to make the community safe for everyone.
