I love wandering the bustling colourful Duncan Saturday market and buying my fresh farm produce, listening to the music and greeting friends.
However, I have just become aware that some of my favourite baked good stalls are using either canola (a genetically modified crop) and/or palm oil — whose plantations are mushrooming in the places where rain forests and orangutans once thrived. Friends travelling in Malaysia are presently breathing in the smoke from Sumatran rain forests now burning for palm oil production.
If enough of us talk to the vendors, or if they read this, we might bring awareness so our treats can be consumed without us or the planet suffering.
