Editor, The Times:
Awareness can come upon us at the most unusual of times.
In August of 2011 Paul Lacerte and his daughter Raven were hunting moose near the infamous Highway of Tears, a section of highway between Prince George and Prince Rupert, B.C., where dozens of women have gone missing or been found murdered.
It was at this moment that the Moose Hide Campaign sprang into mind.
Men in communities across Canada have held a moose hide gathering in February each year since to stand up against violence towards women and children and to spread the campaign by wearing the moose hide square.
Here in the North Thompson Valley we invite men to stand up and be counted as supporters of this movement.
The campaign’s goal is to end violence towards women and children. To help achieve this, the Moose Hide Campaign will distribute one million moose hide squares across Canada.
We will teach our young boys about the true meaning of love and respect, and we will be healthy role models for them.
We will heal ourselves as men and we will support our brothers on their healing journey.
We encourage you to take action, Make the pledge, and stand up to end violence towards women and children.
Please watch for future articles in the Clearwater Times and for posters around town to inform you of our plans to put action to our words in the valley.
In the meantime save the date, Thursday, Feb. 15, 3 – 6 p.m at Dutch Lake Community Center.
The team partners of the Clearwater MHC are: Aboriginal Engagement Success By 6, N.T. Aboriginal Cultural Centre, Raft River School, Clearwater Secondary School, Clearwater RCMP, Clearwater Victim Services, Yellowhead Community Services, Changes that Heal, and BC Metis Federation.
We are also looking for donations. If you would like to to support MHC and get your name on our “Moose,” or to volunteer for this community event, please contact Melody or Cindy.
