More blasts from the past

The annual assault on residents from blueberry cannons is in full swing right now. Every year the same ridiculous, archaic practice of firing timed propane explosions manages to aggravate neighbours more than deter birds – often birds that aren’t even present.

The annual assault on residents from blueberry cannons is in full swing right now. Every year the same ridiculous, archaic practice of firing timed propane explosions manages to aggravate neighbours more than deter birds – often birds that aren’t even present.

Every year the farmers are aware of guidelines in place, but some choose to willfully ignore them because there is no penalty for starting cannons early, running them late or firing them throughout the noon-to-3 p.m. silence period.

Local politicians choose to ignore the issue by hiding behind the provincial regulations, rather than enforce noise bylaws applicable to every other citizen and industry. At the same time, they gladly accept tax money from residents who buy property next to these war zones.

It’s time some of our smiley-face local politicians got off their behinds to help residents unfortunate enough to live near blueberry fields.

If residents are disturbed by cannons, let the blueberry council know – info@bcblueberry.com – and your local politicians.
