To the Editor,
Re: Earlier connection would be helpful, Saturday Beat, July 7.
This very worthwhile article points at one of the sad facts in our modern democracy, the apparent disconnect between government and citizens.
Federally as well as provincially, it may be difficult to envision that a single vote every four or so years has any effect on our affairs.
However, on the local level this should be different since we are very close to the people that we have elected to govern us, and we can attend council meetings and even participate.
For this proximity to be relevant though, more information has to be made available early.
As stated in the article – relative to a development in one’s neighbourhood for example – more information should be made available to the residents of the affected area perhaps before the second reading.
Giving notice of changes just prior to the third reading in council is unfair and impractical to both sides.
The developer by that time has invested already a considerable amount of money and time, and therefore would not be interested to make any changes. Homeowners tend to get the impression they are being ignored. So, yes, more information early, please, for a better community.
