Mother bear was taking care of her family

I have to express my absolute disgust at the killing of a mother bear in Anmore last week.

Editor: I have to express my absolute disgust at the killing of a mother bear in Anmore last week. It’s unfortunate that she had been tagged with a previous history (probably caused by people leaving garbage outside), but this bear had three young cubs and she was foraging in garbage (left out by people) for food for herself and her cubs.

Humans set her up for this sad outcome.  We have to learn to live with wildlife. This is an unfortunate situation, and now the cubs will either have to live in a wildlife refuge, without a mother to teach them how to survive in the real wild, (one that she had to give up to development) or they may be put down, because there is no ‘budget’ to support their rehabilitation.

When will we (as humans) learn that you can’t keep encroaching on the lands of the wild animals without some repercussion?  These animals are trying survive in a world where humans are taking over their territories by building huge housing complexes and homes, and all the humans can do is complain that they are being threatened by those very animals that have had their homes destroyed.

Put the shoe on the other foot, folks. Walk a mile in the footprints of a mother bear with cubs, then think what it is that you would do to protect your home and family.

Editor’s note — The three orphaned cubs are being taken care of by Critter Care Wildlife Society in Langley, which is accepting donations to cover costs.
