A great letter was published about commonly encountered driving and cycling infractions seen on Nanaimo streets. I have written about this for years. The problem is due to a lack of enforcement. Without enforcement, there is not going to be compliance. It is that simple. And why, you ask, is there no enforcement? I can only guess, but I suspect our city council is not in the slightest concerned because they are too busy fighting among themselves to exercise their No. 1 duty to the citizens of Nanaimo, which is to ensure public safety.

Recently I spoke to public works about the dangers associated with the roundabout placed in the middle of Brickyard. I said few drivers are aware how to navigate these traffic features in a safe manner. I was told there was no problem because they are referred to in the book Road Sense for Drivers. How many people have this book, I wonder? It doesn’t even mention the use of signal lights while in the circle when leaving. You wouldn’t last long in Britain if you tried to navigate roundabouts without signalling lane changes and exiting.

It will be pretty exciting when the roundabout at the top of Turner Road has one more entrance and exit.
