MP is true to form

James Lunney offers few surprises in his analysis of pipeline debate

Nanaimo-Alberni MP James Lunney (The News, Jan. 24) bemoans his government’s “legitimate concerns about foreign — particularly American — foundations funding” activities up here …  to “advance certain objectives that may not be in Canada’s interests.”

This is double-talk, as a great many Canadian companies have been owned for decades by foreign investors.

Canada in turn owns many industrial and resource-based companies throughout the world, in some places being the main foreign investor.

So Canada’s federal governments for a long time have supported and practiced economic globalization, but they use the ruse of nationalist PR to distract from the corporatist nature of their political policies.

And now, despite all of the scientific evidence at hand, and mounting exponentially every day, the global environmental consequences of global economic mismanagement are being condemned by Canada’s current federal government as “radical” concerns. The Canadian Conservatives, apeing the US Neo-Cons, are doing their best to brand climate change a pseudo-science.

There’s a kind of desperation, if not downright dishonesty, in this attitude. And I guess there’s a kind of symmetry in the fact that Mr. Lunney’s original profession was long regarded (and still is by many) as a pseudo-science. All things considered, he’s obviously qualified for his current job.
