The letter from T. Elston (The News, April 20) suggests that we leave off helping cats (and I presume she may also wish to include most other sentient animals) in order to ensure that we give only to hungry human beings.
May I suggest that our society has need and room for a huge variety of advocates and recipients?
We need people to come to the aid of children’s hospitals, seniors in crisis, starving people in foreign countries, child abuse victims, the developmentally handicapped, abused animals, and so many, many more worthy organizations that we can find listed on Oceanside Volunteer Association websites.
Perhaps T. Elston could begin working on the needs she deems important. For myself, I’ll start on the ones that I choose to support, and we’ll meet in the middle.
I do believe we can cover a lot more ground this way, instead of choosing to take an antagonistic approach to giving.
