To the Editor,
At its Nov. 28 meeting, city council once again decided to employ outside consultants to do the business of government.
Without even one wary note, they approved $125,000 to employ a consultant to prepare a report on an element of emergency preparedness. This comes on top of a recent $240,000 spent on consultants who are now promoting a new sports multiplex in the city. And let us not forget the Integrity Group which mayor and council employed to improve relationships among council. This was another type of consultant. And then there were the engineering consultants for the Colliery Dam. How much has the City of Nanaimo spent on consultants in 2016? An awful lot I would surmise, with rates of as much as $295 per hour. Is anyone actually scrutinizing these vast sums of taxpayer dollars? Are we really getting our money’s worth? We certainly didn’t with the Integrity Group, but at least they weren’t fully paid.
