New children’s play area hideous

An open letter to the CVRD and Parks administration:

I am a Youbou resident, having lived in Youbou for many years.

Over the past year the CVRD decided to condemn the swings, (that were constructed of steel pipes and chains), and a children’s play area that was constructed of fibreglass, wood and metal at the Youbou ballfield park.

Recently, both the metal swing set and the materials that were used to construct the children’s play area were removed.

The CVRD have replaced the children’s play area with what looks like an artist’s vision of a child’s worst nightmare made out of steel.

Not only have the parks staff personnel created this hideous piece of steel but in their creation that actually made it worse.

In order to separate this piece of junk from the rest of the park, they have surrounded it by placing huge rocks and logs in a square around it.

Not only are these rocks and logs going to cause all sorts of accidents with both the children and parents — what child and young parent doesn’t want to try walking on a round log or a slippery rock — but worse yet, what unleashed dog doesn’t want to leave the faeces or urine on or beside these objects?

And please don’t bring up the idea that pet owners are responsible and clean up after their pets. I have witnessed both locals and visitors allow their dogs to run amok, leave their droppings in both the ballfield area and park and then watch these “responsible” owners walk away from these deposits without the slightest sign of guilt.

Further; what I would really like to know is, how much did it cost us, the taxpayer, to remove the existing equipment and erect this ridiculous display?

I would bet both the CVRD and Parks department will be too embarrassed to show us what that real cost actually is.
